What is a Religious Vocation?

The word vocation is derived from the Latin vocare, "to call". A religious vocation is an invitation from Our Blessed Lord to dedicate one's life most especially to His service. It is a call to love God with an undivided heart and to serve Him in a unique way through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

As Carmelite Sisters of Our Lady, we are called to be women of prayer and women of mission. We live our lives in community, supporting one another in our journey of faith while serving the Church through our various apostolates, particularly in education and formation.

The Journey to Religious Life

1
Aspirancy

A period of initial discernment for women who have completed at least high school education to explore religious life.

2
Postulancy

A time of deeper immersion into community life, learning the routines and spirituality of the congregation.

3
Novitiate

A two-year period of formal formation, focusing on prayer, study of the constitution, and preparation for vows.

4
Temporary Profession

Living the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for a period of three to six years before final profession.

5
Final Profession

A lifelong commitment to God and the congregation, dedicating one's entire life to His service.
